Specialized OCD Treatment

At Emerald Coast TMS of Fort Walton Beach, we closely handle OCD cases as we understand the complications and the need for customized care plans. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by obsessions—unwanted thoughts or images that cause anxiety—and compulsions—behaviors performed to relieve that discomfort. Individuals may experience both symptoms or just one.

Recognizing the Symptoms

OCD symptoms can significantly impact daily life. For a diagnosis, these symptoms must be time-consuming, causing considerable distress and impairing social or occupational functioning.

  • Fear of Contamination: Avoiding perceived harmful substances or germs.
  • Violent Thoughts: Intrusive fears of harming oneself or others.
  • Responsibility Anxiety: Concerns about being accountable for disastrous events.
  • Perfectionism: Intense focus on details and mistakes.
  • Intrusive Sexual Thoughts: Unwanted images or thoughts related to sexual acts.
  • Religious Scrupulosity: Excessive concern over moral or religious issues.
  • Identity Obsessions: Questions about one’s self-concept.
  • Washing and Cleaning: Engaging in repetitive cleansing rituals.
  • Touching or Tapping: Performing specific actions to reduce anxiety.
  • Checking: Constantly verifying things to alleviate doubt.
  • Repetitive Reading or Writing: Engaging in these tasks to soothe obsessive thoughts.
  • Mental Compulsions: Engaging in internal rituals to cope with obsessions.
  • Arranging or Ordering: Organizing items until they feel “just right.”
  • Seeking Reassurance: Continuously asking for confirmation to ease anxiety.

How TMS Therapy Addresses OCD

In 2018, the FDA approved deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as an adjunct treatment for OCD. This non-invasive therapy targets specific areas of the brain involved in regulating thoughts and emotions. At Emerald Coast TMS of Fort Walton Beach, we utilize a multi-targeted approach and personalized therapy plan, stimulating the Anti-Reward Network and the Salience Network. This process helps to reset and strengthen brain activity associated with OCD, facilitating improved communication between these networks.
